On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin murdered Mr. George Floyd, a black man, in broad daylight under the watchful eyes of others. Derek Chauvin, a white police officer placed his knee on the neck of Mr. Floyd and killed him. Mr. Floyd continued to say that he could not breathe, but that meant nothing to Derek Chauvin, nor to the three other officers standing with hm. This is the testimony and plight of black lives within the United States of America— the land of the tree and home of the slaves.
This egregious, inhumane, and immoral act is the culmination of innumerable accounts of violence and systemic hatred against black people in this country. It is not happenstance that Derek Chauvin was so cavalier in murdering this black man in cold blood. It is the sentiment of this country, where black people can be callously murdered without any reprisal— from vicious white supremacist police officers, vigilante citizens, and a silent white society that is so fragile that it does not acknowledge the truth, but rather hides behind its pseudo religious, self-righteous practices. They are the bigots and gatekeepers of this oppressive regime. This is the land in which rogue police officers have impunity and where justice does not prevail. Never mind that the United States touts itself as the moral compass of the world sending so-called “missionaries” to other countries under the guise and pretense of peace to later assassinate its leadership.
The United States is a bastion of murderous leadership and civilian hypocrisy. While Black people within this country continue to live under tribute without any legal redress, reprisal, or recourse. Within its documents, the Founding Fathers stated that Black people were 3/5th humans in order to justify and absolve themselves of any wrongdoing— even until this day. Blacks have demanded reparations, to know avail. Albeit, the Jews have received reparations, and the Japanese have received restitution for their internment during the war. Black people are angry and fed up with this oppressive regime.
The entire nation is in an uproar and changes to laws have been under discussion. We demand and continue to demand equity and restitution for the centuries of free labor in which this country has received at hands of our African forebears. Our people built this country, but white society and others continue to benefit and reap from that which they have not sown, amassing fortunes from slavery to the present time. However, many whites are unwilling to acknowledge this, as they intentionally continue to deny our just due. They continue to benefit from their white privilege and the structures and substructures in place that they have created in order to sustain themselves. As such, the blood of the many innocent is crying out from the ground for vengeance.
White society and its religious leaders can no longer attempt to absolve themselves of their wicked and evil practices. They continue to posture themselves as righteous, but they are liars and thieves. We demand justice— so we cry aloud and spare not.
Now, out of the midst of suffering, black people and others throughout the world, are crying out for justice— not just for George Floyd, but for centuries of inhumane acts and crimes against us. Black lives do matter. This nation is on center stage having to give an account for its actions. This nation bears the disdain and disgust of many around the world standing in solidarity with us. This nation is a cesspool of vermin— immorality and inhumanity. The pandemic racism, white supremacy racism, institutional racism, structural and historic racism are all exacerbating factors that must be abolished. The notions of white supremacy racism and white privilege have literally decimated this country from inside. It is a powder keg ready to explode.
We will continue to say to America that there will be no peace if there is no justice. America the great will ultimately and invariably destroy itself, if the demands for restitution and reparations are not instituted. To quote the phrase of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer— black people are, “Sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Though Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it best— Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself.”
And so, it is even now.
আমেরিকায় সঙ্কট বাড়ছে
গত ২৫শে মে মিনিয়াপোলিসের পুলিশ অফিসার ডেরেক সভিন অনেকের চোখের সামনে জর্জ ফ্লয়েড নামে এক কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ মানুষকে প্রকাশ্য দিবালোকে মেরে ফেলে। শ্বেতাঙ্গ ডেরেক সভিন হাঁটু দিয়ে গলা চেপে রেখে জর্জ ফ্লয়েডকে হত্যা করে। জর্জ বারবার বলছিল, “নিশ্বাস নিতে পারছি না … পারছি না।” কিন্তু সেই আর্তনাদ না ডেরেক সভিনের কানে পৌঁছেছে, না তার তিন সহকারী অফিসারের কানে, যারা অকুস্থলে ছিল। আমেরিকা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে কৃষ্ণাঙ্গদের জবানবন্দি এটাই। বৃক্ষস্বরূপ এই দেশ ক্রীতদাসদেরও ঠিকানা বটে।
মর্মান্তিক, অমানবিক এবং অনৈতিক এই কুকর্মটি এই দেশে কৃষ্ণাঙ্গদের প্রতি সামগ্রিক ঘৃণা এবং তাঁদের উপর ঘটে চলা অসংখ্য হিংস্র ঘটনাবলিরই পরিণতি। এমনটা নয় যে, ডেরেক সভিন হঠাৎ উগ্রমূর্তি ধারণ করে এই কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ মানুষটিকে মেরে ফেলেছে। দেশটিতে যে আবেগ বহমান, যেখানে কালো মানুষদের ঠান্ডা মাথায় খুন করে শাস্তি না পাওয়াটাই দস্তুর, যেখানে বিদ্বেষ ভরা সাদা চামড়ার পুলিশ অফিসারেরা, নজরদার নাগরিকেরা এবং নীরব এক শ্বেতাঙ্গ সমাজ এতটাই পলকা যে সত্যিটাকে স্বীকার না করে মেকি এক ধর্মীয় আর পবিত্রতার আড়ালে নিজের ভালোমানুষি বজায় রাখে। এরা গোঁড়াও বটে, আবার এই অত্যাচারী শাসনব্যবস্থাকে প্রহরা দিচ্ছে এরাই। এ এমন এক দেশ, যেখানকার আইন পুলিশ অফিসারের পোশাক পরা দুর্বৃত্তদের অব্যাহতি দেয়। বিচার বলে এখানে কিছু নেই। আমেরিকা যুক্তরাষ্ট্র যে বিভিন্ন দেশে তথাকথিত ‘মিশনারি’-দের শান্তির বার্তা নিয়ে পাঠিয়ে, তারপরে সেখানকার নেতৃত্বকে হত্যা করে নিজেকে দুনিয়ার নৈতিক কম্পাস বলে জাহির করে থাকে, তা ধর্তব্যে না আনলেও চলবে।
আমেরিকা যুক্তরাষ্ট্র আদতে খুনে নেতা আর দুমুখো নাগরিকদের এক দুর্গ। যেখানে কৃষ্ণাঙ্গরা আইনব্যবস্থার থেকে অন্যায়ের কোনও সুবিচার না পেয়ে বেঁচে আছে। দলিল-দস্তাবেজে দেখা যায়, দেশের পিতৃসম প্রতিষ্ঠাতারা বলছেন কালো মানুষেরা প্রকৃতপক্ষে পাঁচ ভাগের তিন ভাগ মানুষ। যাতে তাঁদের প্রতি কোনও অন্যায় করলে সেই অন্যায় ঘটানোর যুক্তি দেখিয়ে অনায়াসে হাত ধুয়ে ফেলা যায়। সেই ধারাবাহিকতা এখনও বজায় আছে। কৃষ্ণাঙ্গরা ক্ষতিপূরণ দাবি করেছেন, তবে তাতে কেউ কান দেয়নি। যদিও ইহুদিদের ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়া হয়েছে। এবং জাপানিরাও যুদ্ধের সময়ে বন্দি থাকার দরুন প্রত্যর্পণ সহ ক্ষতিপূরণ পেয়েছে। কালো মানুষেরা তাই ক্ষুব্ধ এবং এই অত্যাচারী শাসনব্যবস্থা থেকে তাঁদের আর কিছু চাইবার নেই।
সারা দেশ জুড়ে এখন তোলপাড় চলছে। অনেকে আলোচনা করেছেন আইনগুলিকে পাল্টানো হোক, আমরা ন্যায্যতার দাবি জানাচ্ছি এবং বহু শতাব্দী ধরে আমাদের আফ্রিকার পূর্বপুরুষরা এই দেশেতে যে বিনামুল্যে শ্রম দিয়ে গেছেন, তার জন্য বারবার ক্ষতিপূরণ চেয়ে আসছি। এই দেশ আমাদের হাতে তৈরি হয়েছে, কিন্তু সাদা চামড়ার মানুষ এবং অন্যন্যরা ফসল তুলেছে বীজ না বুনেই। ক্রীতদাসপ্রথার দৌলতে সমৃদ্ধ হয়েছে ওরা। যদিও বহু শ্বেতাঙ্গ তা মানতে চায় না। চামড়া সাদা হওয়ার সুবাদে ওরা ফায়দা তুলে যায় আর বিভিন্ন কাঠামো ও অনুকাঠামো বানিয়ে নিজেদের অবস্থান টিকিয়ে রাখে। এমতাবস্থাতায় বহু নির্দোষ মানুষের রক্ত এই জমিতে মিশে প্রতিশোধ নেওয়ার জন্য চিৎকার করছে।
শ্বেতাঙ্গ সমাজ এবং ওদের ধর্মীয় নেতারা আর নিজেদের শঠতা এবং ক্রূর কাজগুলির থেকে নিজেদের হাত মুছে ফেলতে পারবে না। ন্যায়পরায়ণতার যতই ভড়ং করুক না কেন, আসলে ওরা মিথ্যাবাদী এবং চোর। আমরা বিচার চাই— তাই চেঁচাচ্ছি। ওদের আমরা ক্ষমা করব না।
এই যন্ত্রণার মধ্যেও কালো মানুষ এবং অন্যরা সারা পৃথিবী জুড়ে বিচারের জন্য চিৎকার করছেন। শুধু জর্জ ফ্লয়েড-এর জন্য নয়। শতাব্দীর পর শতাব্দী ধরে যে অমানবিক কাজ এবং অপরাধগুলি আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে হয়েছে, তার প্রতিবাদে। কালো মানুষদের জীবনেরও মূল্য আছে। এই রাষ্ট্র আজ মঞ্চের মাঝখানে দাড়িয়ে নিজের কৃতকর্মের বিবরণ দেবে। এই দেশের প্রতি সারা পৃথিবীর অনেক মানুষের ঘৃণা এবং বিতৃষ্ণা জমে আছে। ওনারা সবাই সৌহার্দবোধে আমাদের পাশে এসে দাঁড়িয়েছেন। এই দেশ এখন অনৈতিকতা এবং অমানবিকতার পাঁকে কিলবিল করা কীটেতে ভরে গেছে। অতিমারির সময়েও জাতিবিদ্বেষ, শ্বেতাঙ্গদের শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব জাহির করবার জন্য জাতিবিদ্বেষ, প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক জাতিবিদ্বেষ, কাঠামোগত এবং ঐতিহাসিক জাতিবিদ্বেষ— ক্রমবর্ধমান এই সব উপাদান এবার নস্যাৎ হওয়া প্রয়োজন। সাদারাই সেরা— এমন জাতিবিদ্বেষপূর্ণ ধারণা এবং শ্বেতাঙ্গ হওয়ার সুযোগসুবিধে নিয়ে নিয়ে ভিতর থেকে দেশটাকে রসাতলে পাঠানো হয়েছে। এই বারুদে বিস্ফোরণ ঘটবেই।
আমেরিকাকে আমরা বলতেই থাকব, যেখানে বিচার নেই সেখানে শান্তিও নেই। শেষ অবধি মহান যে আমেরিকা, সে অবশ্যম্ভাবী নিজেকে ধ্বংস করবে, যদি না প্রতিষ্ঠানিক উপায়ে প্রত্যর্পণ এবং ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়া হয়। নাগরিক অধিকাররক্ষা কর্মী ফ্যানি লৌ হ্যামার-এর উদ্ধৃতি ধার করে বলতে হয়, কালো মানুষেরা “খিন্ন হতেও ক্লান্তি বোধ করে এখন।” যদিও রেভারেন্ড ডঃ মার্টিন লুথার কিং বেশ বলেছিলেন— “যারা অত্যাচার সয়েছে, তারা চিরকাল অত্যাচার সইবে না। মুক্তির আকাঙ্খা শেষ অবধি প্রকট হবে।”
এখন যেমন হয়েছে।
গেল ফ্রেজিয়ারের লেখাটি খুবই গুরত্বপূর্ণ। বিশেষত তিনি ওদেশেরই এক কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ বলেছেন নিজের অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে। এক জায়গায় তিনি লিখেছেন, ‘অতিমারির সময়েও জাতিবিদ্বেষ, শ্বেতাঙ্গদের শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব জাহির করবার জন্য জাতিবিদ্বেষ, প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক জাতিবিদ্বেষ, কাঠামোগত এবং ঐতিহাসিক জাতিবিদ্বেষ— ক্রমবর্ধমান এই সব উপাদান এবার নস্যাৎ হওয়া প্রয়োজন। সাদারাই সেরা— এমন জাতিবিদ্বেষপূর্ণ ধারণা এবং শ্বেতাঙ্গ হওয়ার সুযোগসুবিধে নিয়ে নিয়ে ভিতর থেকে দেশটাকে রসাতলে পাঠানো হয়েছে। এই বারুদে বিস্ফোরণ ঘটবেই।’ এখানে ‘কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ’র স্থানে ‘মুসলমান’ বা ;দলিত’ বা ‘আদিবাসী’ লিখে দিলে আর ‘সাদা’ বা ‘শ্বেতাঙ্গ’র স্থানে ‘কট্টর বর্ণবাদী হিন্দু’ লিখে দিলে প্রবন্ধটি একই সঙ্গে গণতান্ত্রিক ভারত প্রসঙ্গেও সমান প্রযোজ্য।
